David’s offensive squads at U of C made national headlines by leading all NCAA teams in rushing for two consecutive years, averaging 3000+ yards per season. They also set a season-high single game mark in 1992 by rushing for 615 yards in one game. While leading the Maroon offense, David coached the running backs and quarterbacks. During his tenure, two of his running backs were named NCAA Division III 1st Team All-America and one was named UAA Offensive Player of the Year. Both have since been inducted into the U of C Athletic Hall of Fame. Additionally, his star quarterback both passed and rushed for over 1000 yards and was named 1st Team All-UAA. Before his record-setting stint at U of C, David was Head Football Coach and Defensive Coordinator at Phoenix College in Phoenix, Arizona. His defensive unit led the WSFL in total pass defense and one of his defensive backs was named 1st Team All-America and conference Defensive Player of the Year. Three of his four starting defensive backs earned NCAA Division I scholarships and two eventually played in the NFL. Before leading the Phoenix College football program, David served at three different Phoenix-area high schools as a highly respected varsity Defensive Coordinator. During those nine seasons, David personally coached four future NCAA Division I players. While at Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe, Arizona, David’s defense led all of Arizona 5A football in pass defense, surrendering a meager 361 yards during a ten-game season. While at Chandler High School in Chandler, Arizona, David’s defensive squad once again led all of 5A football in total pass defense, intercepting 32 passes on the season. The Wolves also earned state playoff berths four out of the five years David coached there, once making it to the semi-finals. David began his football coaching career at Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, Arizona, where his tenacious defenses helped the Aztecs win the 4A state championship in 1980 and make the state semi-finals in 1981. Before David began his coaching career, he was a starting free safety at Arizona State University under legendary coach Frank Kush. David started in the 1978 Garden State Bowl versus Rutgers University, where the Sun Devils beat the Scarlet Knights 42-14. David played his high school football in Tempe, Arizona at McClintock High School, where he was a team captain. David started at both quarterback and free safety on the 1976 team that went 10-0 and won the Central Division Championship. That season he earned 2nd Team All-Conference honors as a quarterback and 1st Team All-State, All-Southwest America and All-Decade Arizona honors as a defensive back.
